Massimiliano Gatti : Confini Invisibili

MASSIMILIANO GATTI:
INVISIBLE BORDERS
Photographic Exhibition
8th February – 8th March 2013

RB Contemporary presents, from 8th February to 8th March 2013 at Foro Buonaparte 46 in Milan, ‘INVISIBLE BORDERS’, photographer Massimiliano Gatti’s personal collection.

The exhibition is made up of five different series by Gatti, created from his travels in the Middle East, following Archeological projects. In each series we can perceive a strong desire to make people reflect on the real current situation in these lands, overcoming our limited and partial knowledge of the situation.

The ‘Limes’ series – limits – borders, – is a personal interpretation of real space; a reworking of the concept of thresholds, re-elaborated in order to become a frame, while retaining the limits of the image in the picture. The window, which has become a shot, circumscribes and renews the landscape. It creates a new totality; delimitating, while also exhibiting, we have a double view of the image.

In contrast with this revelation is the series called ‘L’invisibile dentro’., the subject of which are windows.; barriers which separate the external from the internal. A clear metaphor can be read here about our ability to see the reality of the Syrian situation. It can be seen, but not understood clearly. For Gatti, reporting on the Middle-Eastern question is urgent, but he is able to do so with a discrete approach and a delicate viewpoint. He invites reflection without being overbearing.

The clear and bright desert light bursts through into his ‘Rovine’ series of photographs, where imposing and solemn remains from a glorious past capture the eye and the mind so much that they become a foundation for the aesthetics of the Sublime.

Perfect classical forms, marked by time and by man, witnesses of prosperity and harmony, in complete contrast with a fragmented and violent modernity. Photography is a way of making memories from the past which can provide nourishment for the present.

Perfect, sunny, silent photographs, without human presence, and yet the landscape is pervaded by it. There are no direct witnesses to the controversial current situation, but they are lived, impregnating the reality portrayed.

Light, colourful images also make up the ‘Promised Land’ series, where small personal objects which accompany Gatti on his travels are place on colourful maps of the Middle East. The awfulness of the images is revealed on close observation, where we can see that the limits drawn did not reflect reality. There is no objective representation of the world.

Finally, there is ‘The Dark Side’ series, presented here for the first time, where Gatti scours deeply into the human soul, photographing designs and traces left on prohibited houses at the edges of the city. Places in which, hidden from the eyes of society’s modesty, visceral compulsions and repressed desires are expressed. These images, printed as negatives, show bestial figures; instantly recorded, obscurely, and without judgement, showing only a trace of human presence.

For Gatti, being a witness for the Middle Eastern reality is a need, an ethical gesture which highlights, through its splendid, respectful style, its intense and affectionate cognitive tension towards the Syrian and Arab world. It is a new way of portraying the Middle East on tip-toes in the sand.

The inauguration will be held on Thursday 7th February 2013, from 6pm to 9pm.
